Young Citizens Magistrate’s Mock Trial Competition 2025
Pupils from Years 9 to 11 participated in the regional heat of the prestigious Young Citizens Magistrate’s Mock Trial Competition on Saturday, 22nd March, held at a local magistrates' court. Competing against teams from six other schools, our students secured an impressive runner-up position.
Mr. Saint-Prix, who prepared the pupils for the competition, expressed his pride, saying, "Today was a proud moment for St. Mary’s. Our students not only rose to the challenge but also left a lasting impression on everyone present, especially the judges."
The competition, designed to provide students with a deeper understanding of the legal system, helps them build confidence, enhance teamwork and communication skills, and sharpen their ability to think critically under pressure. This year’s group excelled in all of these areas and more.
“I was incredibly proud of how they conducted themselves throughout the trial,” said Mr. Saint-Prix. “Their preparation and passion were evident from the start, and it didn’t go unnoticed. One of the judges was so impressed by their performance and attitude that he personally expressed interest in visiting our school in the near future. That kind of feedback speaks volumes about the impact our students made.”
“Through this experience, the students gained more than just recognition—they achieved personal growth and a real sense of accomplishment. The chance to stand in a real Magistrates’ Court and perform with such confidence is something they will carry with them for years to come.”
The Magistrates’ Court Mock Trial Competition offers young people an invaluable opportunity to understand how the law touches every aspect of their lives. It provides insight into the workings of the legal justice system while giving students the chance to prepare legal arguments. This year, they worked with a specially written criminal case—the charge of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place—and faced off against other schools, taking on the roles of lawyers, witnesses, and court officials as they prosecuted and defended the case.
