Year 9 Reach for the Stars

Thursday, 20th November 2025

On the second of our school's Days of Recollection (Curriculum Enrichment Day), Year 9 pupils enjoyed an exciting and enriching day of learning about our universe and the development of life on our planet.

As part of their science curriculum and the school’s commitment to STEMM principles (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine), all Year 9 pupils took part in two captivating sessions inside a 360° mobile planetarium set up in the Sports Hall, provided by 'Immersive Experiences'. They watched spectacular films on astronomy and the development of the universe. Of particular interest was an award-winning film exploring the secrets of cosmic chemistry and our explosive origins—tracing the journey from the formation of hydrogen atoms to the synthesis of carbon, to the molecules essential for life.

After their planetarium experience, pupils worked in teams to design and build effective and safe model parachutes, which were put to the test by launching them from the science laboratory windows.

Perhaps the highlight of the day for many was the rocket challenge. Working in small groups, pupils created homemade rockets from recycled materials and launched them from the junior playground during the final lesson of the day. The rockets were powered by white vinegar, with baking soda added moments before launch to trigger propulsion.

Despite the freezing and windy conditions, competition and enthusiasm were high. While many rockets struggled to lift off due to the low temperatures, several achieved impressive heights, with the highest reaching approximately 10 metres.
