Year 7 Day of Recollection at St. George’s Cathedral

On Wednesday 22nd October, all of Year 7 visited St. George’s Cathedral in Southwark for a Day of Recollection — a special time for reflection and learning about our Archdiocese and the Seat of the Archbishop of Southwark.
The trip took place on the Feast of St. John Paul II as part of our first Curriculum Enrichment Day of the year. Pupils were encouraged to think about their personal growth, develop life skills, and explore the values that shape our Catholic community.
Mr Kelly reports:
"The journey itself was exciting, especially travelling by train and spotting famous London landmarks like The Shard and the London Eye. When pupils arrived, they were amazed by the cathedral’s beautiful neo-Gothic architecture and tall spires.
Year 7 were also fortunate to attend a special Mass for Diocesan Jubilarians— priests, and others called to the religious life, whose various anniversaries of their vocations fall in 2025—celebrated by Archbishop John Wilson. During his homily, the Archbishop spoke directly to our pupils, explaining the meaning of the Mass and celebrating those marking anniversaries of their ordinations.
After Mass, pupils explored the cathedral, including the National Shrine of St. Oscar Romero. In Amigo Hall, next to the cathedral, they took part in reflection activities and watched a video about St. Oscar Romero’s life and mission—“The Courage of St. Oscar Romero”—it helped pupils learn about courage, service, and standing up for others."
What Pupils Said:
“My favourite part was walking around the cathedral. I saw the relics of St. Oscar Romero and learnt more about Mary in the Lady Chapel.” — Daniela, Year 7
“I loved the Mass because we got to see the Archbishop and sing hymns.” — Year 7 pupil
“It was beautiful — the hymns were like angels singing. We felt peaceful and thankful to God.” — Alice, Year 7
“We learnt about our school’s values: welcoming others like St Peter, serving others like St Oscar Romero, and working hard - using our talents like St Carlo Acutis.” — Praise, Year 7
A Valuable Experience
The visit to St. George’s Cathedral was a truly valuable experience for everyone. It helped our pupils deepen their faith, learn more about the significance of this place of worship, and understand the impact of St. Oscar Romero on the people of El Salvador—as well as his continuing importance for us today. The experience also helped them feel part of the wider Church community. They returned to school inspired and encouraged to live out our Gospel values each day.
