Year 11 – Start of Year Mass

At the heart of Catholic life is the celebration of the Eucharist, and for our community at St Mary’s, taking part in the Mass is a central expression of our Catholic identity. For our Year 11 pupils and their parents celebrating Mass together at the start of the academic year marks a significant and spiritual beginning to their last year at St Mary’s.
We were delighted to see the school hall filled with pupils, staff, and parents on Tuesday, 9th September, as we gathered for the Start of Year Mass. The Mass was celebrated by Fr James from our neighbouring parish, St Mary’s Church.
In his homily, Fr James spoke to the pupils about the importance of their final year at St Mary’s. He encouraged them to rise to the challenge of living out the message of Jesus, both within and beyond the school community, by always striving to do their best. Recognising the pressures that Year 11 can bring, he also emphasised the importance of maintaining a healthy work/life balance and urged pupils to seek the support of staff, parents, and friends when needed.
Prior to the Mass, pupils and parents were welcomed to the school by Mrs Wheeler-Choudhury, who provided a brief but essential overview of what Year 11 entails at St Mary’s. This was followed by presentations from the Subject Leaders of Religious Education, English, Mathematics, and Science, each outlining the key components of their examination courses.
