Year 10: A Day with Macbeth

Year 10 pupils took full advantage of their second Day of Recollection (Curriculum Enrichment Day) with a whole day focused on one of their GCSE set texts – Macbeth. This was a luxury not often available in a busy school curriculum.

Our pupils were transported to 11^th century Scotland by The Globe Players, a troupe of four actors who presented the key scenes from one of Shakespeare’s most enduring plays on the stage of our Assembly Hall. The actors took on multiple roles throughout the performance, interspersing the drama with clear explanations of the plot and insightful analysis of the characters’ motivations.

Macbeth is a timeless tragedy exploring the corrosive effects of unchecked ambition. Set against the backdrop of medieval Scotland, it follows the downfall of Macbeth, a once-loyal warrior. On his return from war, three witches offer him a glimpse of ultimate power when they prophesy that he will become king. Consumed by the promise of a new future, Macbeth and his wife set out to make this prophecy a reality, unleashing a devastating chain of events as they stop at nothing to seize and keep control, even as their world collapses around them.

Following the performance, the actors generously offered Year 10 the opportunity to ask questions. Pupils responded enthusiastically, posing thoughtful queries not only about elements of the play but also about the challenges of performing multiple productions each week for different audiences.

Later in the day, Year 10 continued their learning in English workshops based on key aspects of Macbeth, building on the outstanding performance they had enjoyed earlier.

We are grateful to the actors from The Globe Players for their engaging performance and for sharing their expertise. We are confident that this experience will help prepare our pupils even more effectively for their GCSE English Literature examinations.
