St Mary's Catholic High School

The Big Lent Walk 2024 - £314.00 raised for CAFOD

During the week beginning 11th March, the whole school took part in CAFOD’s Big Lent Walk 2024. As with last year, pupils walked, or ran, laps of the upper playground, and on a couple of wet days did their walk around our large sports hall.

In the weeks before the walk, pupils were prepared in special assemblies in order that they understood what they would be doing and, more importantly, why they were taking part in the Big Lent Walk 2024.

Our school traditionally supports CAFOD during the season of Lent going back many years. This is the third year in a row that the walk has been the focus of our support for those people across our planet who are the victims of poverty and hunger, including those adversely affected by climate change. The focus of CAFOD’s Lent appeal this year was on the work that they have been doing supporting fishing communities in the West African country of Liberia.

Once again, pupils responded magnificently to the walk  – a true act of SOLIDARITY with our their understanding of Catholic Social Teaching.

Special thanks must go to our PE staff, Ms McSorley and Mr Henriques, for their organisation and support throughout the Big Lent Walk week.

In addition, during the following week, pupils organised cake sales and other fundraising activities to support CAFOD’s work this Lent.
