Start of Year Mass at St George’s Cathedral

Wednesday, 24th September 2025
Nana Yaa and Kachi, our Head Girl and Head Boy, joined five Year 7 pupils to represent our school at the annual Mass celebrating the beginning of the new academic year at St George’s Cathedral, Southwark. They were accompanied by Mr Shields, Mrs Wheeler-Choudhury, and Mr Davis.
This special event brings together schools from across the Archdiocese of Southwark, and it was a wonderful opportunity for our Year 7 pupils to reconnect with the Headteachers and staff of their former primary schools.
The Mass was celebrated by Archbishop John, who, in his homily, invited everyone to reflect on the true meaning of hope. He drew a distinction between everyday hopes and Christian hope. “You may hope for an extra holiday from school,” he said, “but that is not Christian hope.” He explained that Christian hope is rooted in the unshakeable belief that “nothing can separate us from God’s love.”
Archbishop John reminded us that “our hope is because in Jesus, God is with us.” He encouraged all present to be people of real hope, carrying the presence of Jesus in their lives and in their schools.
An element of this Mass was the renewal of commitment by Headteachers, Chairs of Governors, Chaplains, and school staff, who publicly reaffirmed their dedication to the Church’s mission and to being signs of Christ’s presence in their school communities.
Following the Mass, our pupils had the special opportunity to visit the national shrine of St Oscar Romero, located within the cathedral. This visit was particularly meaningful, as St Oscar Romero is a powerful example of faith, courage, and standing up for justice. His life and martyrdom challenge all Christians to live out their faith boldly and compassionately. For our pupils, learning about his legacy helped deepen their understanding of what it means to be a true witness to Christ in the world today.
Before returning to school, the group enjoyed lunch by the Southbank, taking in the sights, sounds, and sunshine of the vibrant Thames-side area—a pleasant and memorable end to a meaningful day.
