St Mary’s Student Leadership Team Election 2025-2026

Once again, students at St Mary’s have cast their votes in the annual election for the new student leadership team for 2025-2026. This year’s election proved especially challenging, as the incoming team will follow in the footsteps of an exceptional group of leaders. Head Girl Godiva and Head Boy Jaeden have led with remarkable dedication, setting a high bar for future leaders.
Election Process
The election process kicked off earlier this term, with Year 10 pupils submitting written applications to the Headteacher, outlining why they should be considered for a leadership role. After reviewing the applications, 23 candidates were selected.
In the penultimate week of term, candidates launched their individual campaigns. School noticeboards were soon covered with posters, sharing their ideas and plans for the future.
Hustings and Campaign Speeches
Excitement reached a peak in the final week of term with the now-annual online hustings. Each candidate delivered a short election speech to the entire school, showcasing their vision for the future. Ideas presented included:
- More house competitions with opportunities for public speaking
- Increased school trips and visits
- Improvements to the learning environment and resources (including playground facilities)
- Continued support for pupil mental health
- More opportunities to celebrate the school’s diverse community through cultural events
Voting and Results
The following day, after pupils had time to reflect on their choices, votes were cast in a secret ballot. The votes were counted overnight, with the results formally announced on the last day of the Lent term, following the Easter Liturgy.
In a packed sports hall, Mr. Shields presented the results to an excited crowd, revealing the new Student Governors and Deputy Head Boys and Girls. The ceremony culminated in the eagerly anticipated announcement of the Head Boy and Head Girl for 2025-2026, whose leadership will begin on the first day of the new Trinity (summer) term.
