St Mary's Catholic High School

Spes Nostra exchange pupils visit St Mary's

 Friday, 6th February 2026

Pupils from Spes Nostra Kuurne, a Catholic High School in Belgium, accompanied by their teachers, arrived on Tuesday, 3rd February. They joined their Year 11 exchange partners for lunch in the school canteen before participating in afternoon lessons together. The following day, Wednesday, was dedicated to exploring London. All pupils involved in the exchange spent the day touring some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery. The group also experienced the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, a highlight for many visitors, and rounded off their day with a memorable performance of the musical Wicked at the Apollo Theatre.

On Thursday, 5th February, Spes Nostra pupils had the opportunity to immerse themselves fully in life at St Mary’s. They accompanied their Year 11 partners to regular lessons, gaining first-hand insight into the routines and atmosphere of a Catholic high school in London.

Reflections on the Exchange

St Mary’s is delighted that the exchange visit was a success, with both the Spes Nostra pupils and their teachers making the most of their time at the school and in London, despite the less than ideal weather. Year 11 pupils Matilda, Semicore, and Abigail reflected on the experience, expressing their pride in representing St Mary’s. They observed the enthusiasm of their Belgian partners, especially regarding the novelty of school uniforms, which are not worn in Belgium.

The three pupils agreed that the exchange programme proved highly beneficial. It enabled everyone to explore the differences and similarities between education systems and encouraged greater cultural understanding. They emphasised how important it is to learn from and appreciate people from different backgrounds.
