Proud2Be - Black History Month at St Mary's

Proud2Be CroydonAs part of Black History Month students will be following the Croydon theme Proud2Be. Local events have been organised by Croydon BME Forum in partnership with Croydon Council.

Taken from an article on the Croydon Develop website - Andrew Brown, Chief Executive of Croydon BME Forum, said: “Our theme this year – Proud2Be – was chosen as we wanted to celebrate all the things that we are proud of. Proud to be black, proud to be a woman, proud to live in Croydon. Whatever you are proud of, we want you to celebrate with us this year during Black History Month.”

During tutor time, students have a focus on local heroes, including: Space Scientist, Maggie Aderin-Pocock; Rapper and Artist, Dave; and Actor and Musician, Idris Elba.

In history lessons, Year 7 focus on ‘The Black Roman Empire’; Year 8 on ‘African Kingdoms in the 12th to 15th Centuries’; and Year 9 study ‘The British Empire in WW1’.

The Debating Club are hosting two debates. On 14th October, the question is: ‘Racism in the UK will never be fully eradicated’, and on 21st October, the question is be, ‘All white people have more privilege than black people in the UK’. It is important to remember that the question posed in a debate is often challenging and is designed to promote strong discussion.
