St Mary's Catholic High School

Oscar Romero Award Presentation

Thursday, 27th March 2025

We were deeply honoured to receive The Oscar Romero Trust Award – Participator Level certificate from Archbishop John Wilson at the annual Oscar Romero Trust Award Mass held at St George’s Cathedral, Southwark, on Thursday, 27th March. The Mass was well-attended by representatives from schools across the Archdiocese of Southwark, and we were thrilled to be one of twelve schools presented with this prestigious award at the conclusion of the Mass. This occasion was especially significant, as it took place close to the National Shrine of St Oscar Romero, located within the cathedral.

Our group of Year 7 pupils arrived early for the Mass, providing them with the perfect opportunity to visit the shrine. The shrine, decorated in the style of a cross from El Salvador, houses relics of St Oscar Romero, including a fragment of the bloodied cloth from the vestments he wore when he was martyred while celebrating Mass on 24th March 1980.

As previously reported, the Oscar Romero Trust Award honours the ongoing efforts of our school—both within the classroom and through extracurricular activities—in promoting the principles of Catholic Social Teaching. This includes advocating for social justice, protecting the environment, supporting the right to participate, upholding the dignity of work, and standing in solidarity with the poor. The award also recognizes our continued commitment to supporting various charities, such as collecting food and clothing for the homeless in our local communities.

In his homily, Archbishop John Wilson reminded us of the powerful example set by St Oscar Romero, especially during this Year of Jubilee, with the theme "Pilgrims of Hope." He explained that Hope is not a shallow or passive expectation, but a deep and active desire for a fairer, more just world, much like the vision St Oscar Romero held.

This award reflects not only our school’s commitment to these values but also the positive impact we hope to continue making in our community and beyond.
