St Mary's Catholic High School

GCSE Results 2024

Thursday, 22nd August was a memorable day at St Mary’s with the publication of our GCSE and BTEC exam results. Overall, the results showed a significant improvement on our already strong record, with a higher percentage of pupils achieving grades 4 and above compared to previous years. The majority of students reached their target grades, allowing them to move on to their first-choice post-16 destinations. There were some outstanding individual performances, including Florian and Angel, who achieved the highest grades in all their subjects, securing a total of sixteen grades 9 and 8 between them.

While the school’s Progress 8 grade is still provisional at this stage, all signs point to a significant increase this year when the Department for Education (DfE) releases the official statistics in the coming weeks. What makes these results even more impressive is the fact that nationally, GCSE results have declined for the third consecutive year.

Mr Shields praised this year group for their dedication and resilience, recalling that they were in Year 7 when the COVID-19 crisis began, and lockdowns were implemented. Unlike many schools across the country, this cohort showed exceptional resilience in all areas of school life. Excellent attendance, outstanding behaviour, numerous achievement awards, and strong leadership skills were standout features of this group. Mr Shields also expressed his gratitude to the staff who supported this year group, emphasizing that the inspection report’s comment about St Mary’s teachers always going the extra mile remains as true as ever.

We wish all our students the very best in the months ahead and want to remind them that they will always be part of the St Mary’s family. We look forward to following their continued progress, wherever their educational and career paths may lead.
