Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions: An Unforgettable Adventure

This term has been a busy and exciting one, with teams of pupils successfully completing a series of Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions. Across four separate trips, pupils participated in both Bronze and Silver practice and qualifying journeys, covering locations across Sussex, Surrey and Dorset

As one of the four key components of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, the expedition section is designed to inspire young people to develop initiative, resilience, and a spirit of adventure. Working in teams, participants are required to plan, train for, and complete a self-sufficient journey — all without direct adult supervision. Staff monitored progress discreetly to ensure that pupils' welfare remained a top priority throughout.

Expedition Details

  • Bronze Practice Expedition: 2 days in East Grinstead (24–25 April)
  • Bronze Qualifying Expedition: 2 days in Guildford and Farnham (6–7 May)
  • Silver Practice Expedition: 3 days in Brighton and Hove (19–21 May)
  • Silver Qualifying Expedition: 3 days in the New Forest (12–14 June)

Reflecting on this year’s programme, Ms Piekarski, our Duke of Edinburgh Co-ordinator, shared her admiration for the students:

This year’s Duke of Edinburgh expeditions went above and beyond anything I could have expected. The students truly impressed all of us, working hard every day to learn new skills — like cooking on a Trangia stove or pitching a tent — and achieving the goals they set for themselves.

Despite facing rain and occasional navigational challenges, they had some fantastic experiences, with many hiking and camping in the woods for the very first time. I was most impressed by their positivity and teamwork, especially when things got tough. They consistently supported each other — helping pack bags, wash dishes, or clean campsites, regardless of whose job it was. This spirit of cooperation showed real personal growth and a wonderful sense of community.

I’m already looking forward to next year’s expeditions, and I believe the students are too.”

For many pupils, these trips marked several exciting firsts — from cooking outdoors to experiencing parts of the UK they had never visited before. For the Silver Award group, one particularly memorable moment was a well-earned visit to Bournemouth Beach, where students cooled their feet in the sea after a long day of walking. After hours of hiking under the sun, the chance to rest by the water, enjoy the coastal views, and simply relax together was a highlight of the trip — and a perfect reminder of the rewards that come from perseverance and teamwork.

Here are just a few highlights in their own words:

  • “I’ve never been to the UK coastline before; getting to see the ocean (English Channel) was incredible.”
  • “My favourite part of the trip was the mud! Our group kept getting stuck in it and having to climb our way out – we were covered in it by the end.”
  • “Getting to spend so much time outside, away from the city, felt great. Even though the hiking was tough, I had so much fun.”
  • “I loved getting to see my classmates and teachers in a new place. You learn so much about a person from spending 48 straight hours with them.”

The Duke of Edinburgh expeditions continue to be a transformative experience for our pupils — building confidence, teamwork, and independence. We are incredibly proud of everything our students have accomplished this term.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Ms Piekarski, Mr Davis, and all the staff who supported the training and expedition programme.
