Beginning of the School Year Mass
Senior students from St Mary’s proudly represented our school at the annual ‘Beginning of the School Year Mass’ at St George’s Cathedral, Southwark, on Thursday, 26th September. The Mass was organised by the Education Service of the Archdiocese of Southwark, with representatives from over 130 primary and secondary schools across the Diocese in attendance.
The Mass was celebrated by the Most Reverend John Wilson, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Southwark. In his sermon, based on the Gospel reading from Luke 9, Archbishop Wilson spoke about the importance of staying curious and open to God’s work in the world, and about deepening our understanding of who Jesus is. The Archbishop’s words were made even more meaningful as he invited students to gather around the altar during his address, creating a more personal and inclusive atmosphere.
Following the Liturgy of the Word, Archbishop Wilson invited all Headteachers, Representatives of the schools’ Governing Bodies, Chaplaincy staff, and members of the Education Service to formally renew their commitment to their important roles and join together in a Prayer of Dedication for the year ahead.
