Advent Charity 2024 - The Manna Society
This Advent, we are proud to once again support The Manna Society, a charity that has been serving the homeless community in London Bridge since 1982. Many of those they support sleep outdoors in all kinds of weather, and the day centre is open seven days a week, year-round. In addition to providing food and clothing, the centre offers vital pastoral support and advice to those seeking accommodation.
As a Catholic community, both pupils and staff at St. Mary's know that Advent is about more than simply waiting for Christ’s arrival; it’s about actively living out the values that Christ taught, especially through caring for the poor and marginalized. By supporting charities during this season, we not only help those in need but also deepen our own spiritual journey. This commitment aligns with Catholic Social Teaching, which emphasizes the dignity of every human person, the common good, and solidarity with those on the margins of society. With Service as one of our school’s three core values, caring for the poor and marginalized has been a cornerstone of our ethos for generations.
As in previous years, we are not asking for money, but for specific items that The Manna Society has identified as essential for their work. We invite pupils and families to contribute according to the needs outlined in the table below. Each of our four houses will be asked to provide different items for adults in need.
